Axios first reported the meeting, with sources close to the matter confirming the plan. According to the outlet, this marks the first direct meeting between the two figures.
The timing places the dinner just ahead of a scheduled Tuesday meeting between Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and leading artificial intelligence executives at the White House. Johnson has indicated that the gathering will address how companies should approach AI safety responsibilities.
Amodei's absence from last week's state dinner honoring Chinese President Xi Jinping—which included OpenAI's Sam Altman and Google's Sundar Pichai—was due to a prior commitment. Trump subsequently extended a personal invitation to the Anthropic leader for Sunday's event, according to Axios reporting.
The relationship between Anthropic and the White House has fluctuated throughout the year. In April, the administration opposed the company's efforts to expand access to its Mythos model. However, following a meeting with Amodei at the G7 summit in June, Trump stated he no longer viewed Anthropic as presenting a national security concern. Some senior officials had discouraged Trump from meeting with Amodei, Axios reported.
The dinner occurs in the wake of Amodei's recent public call for the entire AI sector to decelerate its pace of development—a position Trump has dismissed.
