The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has committed to a multi-year partnership with OpenAI and G42, integrating artificial intelligence agents throughout its business operations. The announcement coincided with a visit to the United Arab Emirates by OpenAI's chief executive Sam Altman, with the agreement witnessed by Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed, according to reporting by The National.

ADNOC will serve as the inaugural energy sector organisation to leverage OpenAI Frontier, a business platform introduced in February that enables companies to construct and oversee AI agents. Neither the financial terms nor the deployment timeline have been made public. The signing represents one of four separate agreements involving Abu Dhabi-based entities that OpenAI revealed on Monday.

The next frontier of AI is not simply doing things faster. It is making possible what was previously beyond reach. Through this landmark partnership with OpenAI and G42, ADNOC is taking a major step towards connecting intelligence across our entire business.

Integration and Infrastructure

The collaboration will merge OpenAI's language models with ADNOC's operational and industrial datasets to create tailored AI systems serving distinct business functions. G42 will supply the underlying computing resources required to run these systems within the UAE. The same company is currently constructing OpenAI's Stargate data centre facility in the nation.

Initial Applications and Scope

The partnership's opening phase will concentrate on streamlining the planning process for petroleum and natural gas field development. According to ADNOC, the AI-driven approach could generate comprehensive development strategies within hours, compared to the several months required through conventional methods. Responsibility for critical business decisions will remain with human personnel.

Looking ahead, the organisations intend to integrate multiple operational phases spanning ADNOC's value chain, encompassing extraction, processing, commercialisation and trading activities. Intelligent systems will evaluate market dynamics, pricing structures and profitability metrics before crude extraction begins, enabling more informed strategic choices throughout the enterprise.

Beyond primary operational uses, the arrangement encompasses security initiatives through OpenAI's Daybreak Blue programme alongside professional development initiatives for ADNOC's workforce. This partnership exemplifies OpenAI's expanding enterprise strategy, building on numerous collaborations established with major professional services organisations throughout the current year.

More capable AI can help us tackle some of the world's hardest problems – particularly around energy. By combining frontier AI, sovereign infrastructure and industry expertise, this first-of-its-kind partnership will help ADNOC move faster, operate more efficiently and make better decisions across the energy value chain. Together, we're shaping the future of AI-enabled energy.

Existing AI Capabilities

ADNOC has already implemented ChatGPT Enterprise across its workforce, reaching more than 40,000 personnel. The organisation currently operates over 200 artificial intelligence applications and maintains 70 robotics initiatives in active deployment or development phases.

Industry Context

The announcement emerged during ADIPEC, the UAE's premier conference for the petroleum and gas sectors. The event unfolds amid challenging circumstances affecting the industry landscape. Reuters disclosed last week that ExxonMobil and Chevron had withdrawn executive participation from the conference citing safety considerations. Escalating tensions surrounding potential additional military action against Iran have also created uncertainty in global energy markets, the news organisation reported.
