Amazon has unveiled plans to channel more than €16 billion ($18 billion) into Germany during 2027, strengthening its footprint across cloud services, artificial intelligence, warehouse operations, satellite connectivity, and television content. The announcement came at the Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin, a gathering presided over by Chancellor Friedrich Merz aimed at drawing corporate investment to the nation. The event also featured a fresh AI collaboration between Germany and Nvidia unveiled the previous day.
The lion's share of the investment—€4.8 billion—will support Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its cloud infrastructure. This funding targets growth of the data centre region centred on Frankfurt, which commenced operations in 2014.
Beyond cloud infrastructure, Amazon intends to establish a second robotics and AI research facility in Berlin, effectively doubling its research operations in the capital. The company has not yet revealed the budget allocated to this new laboratory.
Logistics and employment expansion
The retailer's logistics division will undergo significant upgrades across the country. Six existing warehouses, among them facilities in Bad Hersfeld and Dortmund, are scheduled for modernisation, with completion extending into 2028. A fresh fulfilment centre in Zweibrücken is expected to launch this year, while construction continues on another site in Könnern. According to Amazon, these logistics initiatives will generate over 3,000 new positions.
Satellite and entertainment ventures
Amazon's commitment encompasses sectors beyond warehousing and data centres. The company has secured 24 launch slots with Arianespace, a European rocket operator, to deploy Amazon Leo, its constellation of satellites for global internet coverage. Additionally, Prime Video has scheduled more than 15 original German productions to premiere through 2027.
Building on prior commitments
This latest pledge represents a substantial addition to Amazon's historical engagement with Germany. The company states it has already invested over €100 billion in the nation since 2010 and maintains a workforce exceeding 40,000 employees there, including 3,000 working within AWS. In June 2024, Amazon had separately announced a €10 billion investment initiative, with the bulk earmarked for cloud infrastructure development.
