Anthropic has committed $3.4 billion to acquire gas-fired generators intended to supply power to its data centre operations, according to reporting by the Financial Times published on Sunday. The transaction represents what the outlet describes as the most substantial known infrastructure procurement of its kind undertaken by an artificial intelligence company.

The arrangement involves 1.7 gigawatts of industrial-scale generators and was finalised in late September with OnePWR Solutions, a Texas-based power supplier headquartered in San Antonio. Rather than purchasing electricity from OnePWR, Anthropic instead assumed the company's existing Caterpillar generator orders, which had been placed approximately two years prior, along with responsibility for the installation work required to bring the equipment online.

OnePWR had originally ordered the generators from Caterpillar but lacked the capital to complete the transaction, according to the Financial Times. The arrangement did not involve Anthropic acquiring OnePWR as a company, and no personnel from the power supplier transferred to Anthropic's operations. The specific locations where these generators will ultimately be deployed remain undisclosed.

Both Anthropic and OnePWR declined to provide statements to the Financial Times regarding the transaction. Neither organisation has responded to subsequent inquiries from Bloomberg following the initial report.

The generator purchase arrives as Anthropic moves toward a public market debut. An updated IPO filing submitted the previous week revealed $895 billion in committed funding, with the overwhelming majority earmarked for computational resources and infrastructure development.

The reliance on gas-powered generation reflects a broader pattern within the AI sector. Elon Musk's xAI company is currently defending itself against legal action connected to gas turbines operating at its facility in Memphis.
