During a recorded conversation with Arianna Huffington, founder and chief executive of Thrive Global, Daniela Amodei, president of Anthropic, expressed her opposition to AI-powered romantic companions. The discussion took place at the Think Health conference held in Bentonville, Arkansas, on Friday. Amodei emphasized that certain roles should remain exclusively human, regardless of how sophisticated artificial intelligence becomes.
I think that's a terrible use of AI and people should not do it.

According to Amodei, romantic AI relationships represent "another step further down the road of disintermediation of humans being further from one another." Her reservations stem from observing the negative effects that social media platforms have had on human connection.
Social media's cautionary tale
Amodei pointed to services like Snapchat and Instagram as examples of how technology has progressively displaced direct human interaction. Virtual disagreements have increasingly supplanted the kind of community engagement that once occurred face-to-face. She observed that these trends have created legitimate doubts about technology's capacity to strengthen human relationships.
What it's led to is a warranted skepticism from people that technology can be used to bring us closer together.

Amodei suggested that society would benefit from reducing technological mediation and prioritizing direct human connection.
Boundaries for artificial intelligence
Amodei articulated a clear position on which human relationships should remain off-limits to AI systems, even as their capabilities advance.
Claude can never be your manager or your therapist or your partner.

She characterized these roles as "fundamental human relationships" that she believes will only grow in importance. Instead, Amodei envisions AI handling monotonous or solitary work, thereby freeing individuals to invest more energy in meaningful relationships with loved ones. Healthcare illustrates her vision: AI could accelerate how physicians access medical information, enabling them to dedicate greater attention to patient care.
The companion AI landscape and policy updates
Platforms including Replika, Nomi and Character.AI have built business models around enabling users to develop connections with customized chatbots. Character.AI recently entered bankruptcy proceedings.
Anthropic announced updates to Claude's usage guidelines last week, introducing restrictions on deceptive practices, weaponry and monitoring systems. A significant addition prohibits the model from engaging in roleplay scenarios involving minors. These policy modifications become effective on 12 November.
The company disclosed to investors this week that it generated $16.8 billion in revenue during the third quarter. Anthropic is moving toward a public listing, with speculation that this could occur as early as November.
