Meta's Instagram division unveiled Thursday that Edits, its dedicated short-form video editing application, has arrived on macOS. The software is available at no cost, though it requires Apple Silicon processors starting with the M1 generation and mandates an Instagram login to use.

The platform debuted Edits on mobile devices in April 2025 as a direct competitor to CapCut, the editing tool controlled by ByteDance, TikTok's parent organization. According to statements made to Gulf News, the mobile iteration has attracted more than 50 million creators.

While the Mac version maintains visual similarities to its mobile counterpart, the desktop release provides expanded screen real estate and enhanced capabilities suited for more demanding editing workflows.

Enhanced Desktop Capabilities

The Mac application includes a multi-track timeline, keyframe support for seamless transitions, visual audio waveforms, and color adjustment instruments such as wheels and curves for fine-tuning video appearance.

Additional functionality encompasses the ability to load custom typefaces and LUTs—color presets—alongside personalized keyboard shortcut configuration. The platform integrates Instagram's collection of licensed, royalty-free audio tracks, a substantial effects library, and automatic caption generation without limits.

Upon completion, creators can publish directly to Instagram from their Mac, complete with hashtags and location information, eliminating the previous requirement to transfer files to a mobile device. Alternatively, videos can be exported in portrait or landscape orientation at resolutions up to 4K and without watermarking.

AI-Assisted Editing

The desktop version incorporates AI agent functionality through the Model Context Protocol, a framework enabling AI assistants to interact with external applications. This allows editors to delegate specific editing tasks to artificial intelligence tools.

Matthew Simari, who oversees Edits, explained that creators have flexibility in selecting their preferred AI agent, including Meta's Muse assistant. "For example, a creator could ask Muse for a rough cut and then finish the edit by hand," Simari stated.

Current Limitations

The Mac application currently lacks cross-device project synchronization, preventing simultaneous work on the same file across phone and desktop platforms, though saved audio and text styles from the mobile version do transfer over. A Windows version remains unavailable at this time, and Instagram committed to releasing updates for the Mac application on a weekly basis.
