Saft, the battery division of TotalEnergies, has begun operating fresh production lines dedicated to solid-state batteries at its Bordeaux manufacturing hub. The initiative targets sectors pursuing electrification, particularly aviation and space industries. The company claims to be the first in France able to both develop and manufacture solid-state batteries featuring sulfide and polymer electrolytes that function at ambient temperatures.
The manufacturing infrastructure represents the transition from laboratory work spanning several years into full-scale production. Saft has withheld specifics regarding output volumes and deployment schedules.
Performance Gains and Manufacturing Efficiency
Solid-state battery technology substitutes a solid material for the liquid electrolyte found in standard lithium-ion cells. Saft highlights that this architectural change strengthens cell reliability. The energy density advantage reaches approximately 50 percent above conventional lithium-ion alternatives, according to the manufacturer.
The production methodology employed by Saft utilizes a dry electrode approach. This technique delivers potential carbon footprint reductions of up to 40 percent during the manufacturing phase, the company states. This metric, however, reflects only one segment of the complete battery production lifecycle.
Early Testing and Industry Response
Saft has furnished semi-solid-state battery cells to partners evaluating next-generation electric and hybrid aircraft designs. For aviation and space missions, the manufacturer emphasizes that reliability, operational characteristics, and energy storage capacity represent critical performance factors. Interest from space sector participants has also emerged, Saft reports.
