The William and Charlotte Bloomberg Public Science Common, which welcomed visitors at Boston's Museum of Science starting October 10, 2026, features two Deep Spaces developed by Ars Electronica Solutions as its centerpiece. Spanning approximately 10,000 square feet (930 m²), these interconnected yet independently operable installations establish an immersive setting where visitors engage with science through dialogue and shared discovery.
The dual Deep Spaces function as flexible tools for programming: they can operate with separate content simultaneously or merge into unified presentations. The facility maintains continuous accessibility, layering always-available immersive experiences with scheduled live programming. This approach transforms how contemporary scientific and technological topics are presented—moving beyond passive communication toward active participation and collective exploration.
From Boston to Oulu: Deep Space as an international platform
On October 9, 2026, the Museum and Science Centre Tiima in Oulu, Finland inaugurated Visio, an immersive Experience Space that joins the expanding international Deep Space network. The installation integrates wall and floor projections at large scale, three-dimensional visualizations and motion tracking technology. This implementation represents both a continuation and an advancement of the long-standing partnership between Oulu and Ars Electronica, formalized through a cooperation agreement that commits both parties to ongoing joint development of the space and its programming.
The Oulu installation creates pathways for locally produced content to circulate within the broader Deep Space Community while simultaneously bringing international productions to regional audiences. The Boston and Oulu projects illustrate the platform's adaptability: functioning as a paired installation within a major museum or as a standalone Experience Space within a cultural institution.
Visio is not just a new space in Oulu, but also a gateway to an international network of expertise and creativity. We are excited about the opportunity to develop and produce our own content here in Oulu, alongside bringing international productions to local audiences. Our collaboration with Ars Electronica opens up new possibilities for exchanging ideas, sharing expertise and developing Visio as part of the international Deep Space community.

Deep Space by Ars Electronica worldwide
The original Deep Space, conceived by the Ars Electronica Futurelab, launched at the Ars Electronica Center in Linz on January 1, 2009, and has maintained its status as a major draw. The installation showcases three visual dimensions supported by two projection screens each measuring 16 × 9 meters, delivering over 50 million pixels of resolution alongside sophisticated tracking systems—positioning it among the world's most compelling digital experience environments.
Beginning in 2020, Ars Electronica Solutions has stewarded the platform's evolution, customizing implementations for diverse global contexts. Each installation reflects the specific spatial, technical and curatorial needs of its location while deliberately incorporating locally developed experiences and content into the platform's broader development. Deployments have taken place across Austria, Mexico, China, Switzerland, Croatia, Hungary, Singapore and Kosovo. The 2026 additions in Boston and Oulu signal continued expansion of this international ecosystem.
With Deep Space, we want to open up new ways of accessing science and art and connect people across national and cultural boundaries. We develop the technological foundation for this – the different perspectives, ideas and content at each location make every site unique. Bringing this diversity together and learning from one another is, for us, the special value of the Deep Space Community.
