Jeroen Van Hautte, CTO and co-founder of TechWolf, has underscored the critical role that Ghent's entrepreneurial ecosystem plays in sustaining innovation. His remarks come as the German software conglomerate SAP completes its acquisition of the AI-powered workforce analytics company—a transaction reported as Belgium's largest venture-backed software acquisition to date.
SAP's decision to acquire TechWolf reflects the startup's value in helping organizations map employee capabilities and optimize workforce management. The acquisition, valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, positions TechWolf as a cornerstone of SAP's talent and workforce strategy moving forward.
During an appearance on the Tech.eu podcast, Van Hautte addressed the significance of what economists call the flywheel effect—a self-reinforcing cycle in which successful founders and early employees from established startups go on to launch ventures of their own or back emerging companies. Noting that Ghent ranks among the world's densest concentrations of startups, Van Hautte stated: "I think that the flywheel effect is super important."
The conversation also touched on Van Hautte's relocation to San Francisco, TechWolf's revenue model, and the ongoing debate surrounding proprietary versus open-source artificial intelligence frameworks.
