Kortext has acquired StudyStash, integrating the adaptive learning platform into its broader edtech offering as both companies push deeper into higher education markets across North America and internationally. The deal was announced a year after the startup's founders completed their studies at the University of Birmingham, though acquisition terms remain undisclosed.
Ben Ward and Jonathan Graham launched StudyStash after meeting while pursuing computer science degrees at Birmingham and participating in PwC's technology degree apprenticeship programme. What began as a personal project converting their own lecture notes into study materials evolved into a commercial venture after gaining backing through the university's Elevate incubator.
The platform uses artificial intelligence to convert academic content into customised flashcards, quizzes and audio materials. Its algorithms continuously learn student behaviour, identifying knowledge gaps and directing attention toward areas requiring reinforcement. The system provides educators and support teams with data on student performance and learning needs. Integration capabilities extend to major learning management systems such as Canvas, Blackboard and Moodle.
StudyStash's customer base spans more than 160 institutions worldwide, with tens of thousands of active student users. Early adoption began at the University of Birmingham, and the platform now operates across the UK, continental Europe, Africa and North America. Notable adopters include California State University, Minnesota State, Colorado State, the University of Oulu and RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences. The startup also maintains partnerships with California's community college network and EAB, a consultancy serving over 2,800 higher education organisations. Its advisory board draws expertise from senior academics at UCL, Imperial College London and the University of Oxford.
Since launch, we've raised equity finance, scaled to 160+ institutions on three continents, broken into the US market and now been acquired by one of the largest e-learning providers in the field. We've proven we can build, sell and scale and now Kortext gives us the reach to drive StudyStash to reach its full potential.
Ben Ward, co-founder and CEO of StudyStash
Ward explained that the platform emerged from challenges he and Graham faced during their own studies. Recognising broader potential to assist diverse learner populations, they transformed the concept into a formal business venture.
Kortext, established in 2013, operates across thousands of universities globally, delivering digital materials, performance analytics and AI-driven solutions for educational delivery and student success. The acquisition strengthens Kortext's position in UK and North American markets while expanding its suite of AI-integrated learning technologies.
StudyStash brings powerful capabilities that complement our existing strengths and accelerate our AI strategy, while extending our reach further into teaching and learning workflows. Together, we will help institutions embrace AI responsibly, support educators more effectively, and create richer, more personalised learning experiences that help students achieve their full potential.
James Gray, founder and CEO of Kortext
Ward will continue as CEO while Graham remains CTO following the acquisition, with StudyStash operating as an independent brand within Kortext's portfolio. Given that half of StudyStash's existing customer base already operates in the United States, both founders are relocating to Silicon Valley to lead the company's continued growth in the region.
