Unit1 Studio, a British producer of mixed-reality avatar concerts, has closed a £20 million funding round designed to scale its technology and expand the number of productions it can deploy. Balderton Capital led the equity investment, with additional concert-specific financing also secured. The round attracted backing from returning investors Mercuri, Gilston Music and artist manager Paul McGuinness.

The studio's core innovation addresses a significant barrier that has slowed adoption of avatar-based live experiences: the prohibitive expense of developing and moving productions between different locations. While ABBA Voyage demonstrated genuine audience appetite for this format, the economics of replicating such shows elsewhere have remained challenging. Unit1 claims to have engineered a solution that transfers productions between venues with substantially lower costs and faster timelines, enabling the same show to operate across multiple sites without major reconstruction.

Unit1's output blends visual effects, computer-generated imagery and live performance to create mixed-reality experiences. These productions serve artists who no longer perform live tours or whose work presents logistical challenges for audiences seeking direct engagement. The company positions itself as reaching both younger listeners encountering classic music for the first time and longtime fans seeking fresh ways to experience their favourite performers.

Barney Wragg, Unit1's founder, outlined the company's mission around accessibility and economics: "Unit1 is, and will always be, about expanding the connection between fan and artist regardless of time or geography. ABBA Voyage proved audiences love avatar concerts but the development and relocation costs have meant the opportunity of avatar concerts is not being realised. Our ability to develop these shows at a fraction of the cost and replicate them to any location finally makes these shows a commercial reality."

The capital injection will fuel both the creation and operation of Unit1's mixed-reality productions, with the concert-focused portion of the funding earmarked to accelerate the pipeline of shows currently in development.
