Third-party developers now have the ability to teach Siri AI bespoke actions and orchestrate multi-step workflows, with these features rolling out to users over the coming months. Alongside this expansion, Apple has acknowledged that certain Siri AI functions will operate under daily usage caps, and the company plans to charge users for access beyond those thresholds.

On Tuesday, Apple announced that Siri AI is now accessible to all app developers through a Developer Preview. This capability will arrive in the iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3, macOS 27.3 and visionOS 27.3 betas, enabling any application to integrate its features and functionality directly into Siri AI.

Previously, app integration with Siri was limited to predefined categories established by Apple. Developers can now leverage App Intents to define their own custom actions. Apple's documentation includes scenarios such as tracking shipment status, securing dining reservations and submitting purchase orders.

Siri AI skills for apps

Apple is introducing skills as a new capability that enables developers to instruct Siri AI to execute multiple operations in response to a single user request. Additionally, Siri AI will now be able to retrieve any content indexed in Spotlight search, expanding beyond Apple's historically limited category support.

So people can just ask for help in their own words

Apple

According to reporting from The Verge citing Apple's technical documentation, users will not necessarily need to specify which application they are addressing. This convenience extends to scenarios where the relevant app is currently displayed, has an active Live Activity, or has already been referenced in the ongoing Siri conversation.

Apple has begun implementing these same capabilities across 15 of its proprietary applications, including Mail, Maps, Photos and Safari. For instance, users can instruct Siri to locate a café they patronized seven days prior, or to remove files that have remained untouched for twelve months or longer.

When users get it

The Developer Preview serves as a testing phase only. Apple anticipates that the initial developer integrations will become available to end users within several months. The App Store will open submissions for these experiences during spring, and Apple has indicated it will disclose the specific terms and policies governing Siri AI experiences at a later date.

Siri AI functionality continues to be unavailable for EU residents using iOS, iPadOS and watchOS. Apple stated that it is in active discussions with European regulators regarding potential solutions. The feature is also restricted for users aged under 13.

Daily limits, and a fee

Apple's latest announcement also clarifies that certain Apple Intelligence capabilities are subject to daily usage thresholds. These restrictions apply to server-dependent functions, encompassing Siri AI, image manipulation capabilities, Image Playground and the cloud-based models available through Shortcuts.

Expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future

Apple

The company has not disclosed pricing details for this premium tier. Siri AI initially debuted alongside iOS 27 in September and received memory capabilities in the iOS 27.2 release. The current 27.3 beta cycle also introduces Apple Watch listening functionality into the testing phase.
