Mistral has introduced what it describes as its largest and most powerful artificial intelligence model to date, stepping up its challenge in the intensifying global competition for AI leadership. The French company's new offering, Mistral Large 4—colloquially known as le Chonk—represents a one trillion-parameter system that the firm claims surpasses the strongest open-source alternatives available worldwide while "significantly outperforming" any open-weight model created within the United States or Europe.

According to Mistral, the model delivers "exceptional performance" in coding tasks, agentic workflows, and multimodal understanding capabilities. The company further stated: "On critical enterprise workloads, including cybersecurity, finance and law, we find it to be state-of-the-art among open models. In some domains such as visual grounding, it goes further still, surpassing even frontier closed models."

The system has entered preview availability for developers immediately, with full public release scheduled for later this month. Mistral intends to distribute the model via its own API infrastructure.

The Paris-based company has positioned itself as Europe's primary contender against major US artificial intelligence laboratories such as Anthropic and OpenAI, as well as lower-cost open-source alternatives emerging from China. Mistral secured approximately $3.4 billion during a Series D funding round in September, achieving a valuation near $24 billion. Beyond developing proprietary models, the company has begun offering third-party models to its customer base.
