Uber has begun a company-wide deployment of ChatGPT Work, OpenAI's workplace automation agent, reaching more than 30,000 employees, according to an announcement from OpenAI on Thursday. This expansion follows a limited trial involving 1,000 staff members. The tool integrates with widely-used platforms including Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar and Slack, enabling workers to complete multi-step assignments such as drafting meeting summaries, creating presentations and performing data analysis.
The deployment runs on GPT-6.1 Sol as its default model, a version OpenAI introduced last month at approximately one-fifth the cost of its flagship offering. Uber's engineering teams will continue to rely on Codex, OpenAI's dedicated coding platform, for their specific needs.
ChatGPT Work, which OpenAI unveiled in July, is designed to handle complex workflows and deliver completed outputs to users. The initiative reflects Uber's broader effort to optimize its artificial intelligence spending. In August, Uber's chief technology officer Praveen Neppalli Naga indicated that the period of unrestricted AI investment, which he termed "tokenmaxxing," was drawing to a close. Reports indicated that Uber had exhausted its entire 2026 budget allocation for Anthropic's Claude Code by April.
As AI transforms how we work, we want to give everyone the tools to innovate, solve problems and help shape Uber's future

Uber has previously connected workforce reductions to artificial intelligence initiatives. In July, the company eliminated 10% of its customer-service division, marking the first instance in which it explicitly tied staff reductions to an artificial intelligence adoption strategy.
Both OpenAI and Uber have committed to monitoring employee usage patterns and measuring the outcomes generated by the agent throughout the rollout period.
