Coherence Quantum, a quantum hardware company based in Espoo, has secured €2.78 million in seed-stage funding. The round was led by Lifeline Ventures, a venture capital firm headquartered in Helsinki, and included participation from Mårten Mickos, a technology entrepreneur. The company traces its origins to research at Aalto University's Quantum Computing and Devices group.
The startup is building an integrated cryogenic signalling and control platform intended to address a fundamental constraint in quantum computing: as systems grow to include more qubits, the infrastructure required to manage them becomes increasingly complex. Coherence Quantum's approach involves moving control functions closer to the quantum processing unit itself, thereby reducing the wiring, cooling demands and architectural complexity that typically accompany scaling.
Quantum processors depend on precise control signals to manipulate qubits, the fundamental units of quantum information. Traditional designs often require extensive cabling running between room-temperature electronics and processors cooled to near absolute zero, creating significant engineering challenges as qubit counts rise. Coherence Quantum is developing technology that integrates these signalling and control capabilities within cryogenic environments, potentially simplifying system design and reducing infrastructure overhead.
Quantum computers won't scale by adding qubits alone. The infrastructure around them has to scale too. We're starting with signal conditioning and building towards higher-density interfaces and, ultimately, more integrated cryogenic control. Our aim is to give quantum-computer builders an architecture that can support larger systems without wiring, cooling requirements, and complexity growing at the same rate.
Aashish Sah, CEO and co-founder of Coherence Quantum
The €2.78 million funding will be deployed across several priorities: establishing a dedicated research and development facility in Espoo, creating initial product prototypes and manufacturing processes, advancing the underlying technology through continued research, and hiring additional team members.
Coherence Quantum is addressing a pressing need in quantum computing, supporting large numbers of qubits while managing the growing challenges of heat, noise and complexity. This type of sophisticated technology is needed to turn quantum computing into practical and scalable systems. The team behind Coherence Quantum is impressive, and I am delighted to be an investor and supporter.
Mårten Mickos, technology entrepreneur and investor
The quantum industry has proved that increasingly capable processors can be built. The next challenge is building the infrastructure that allows them to scale. Coherence Quantum is going after a fundamental part of that problem. They have an exceptional technical team with a clear view of where the industry is heading and the ambition to build far more than a single component. If quantum computers are going to scale, the architecture around the qubits has to scale with them, and we're backing them to become a key part of how larger quantum computers are built.
