The "mouse droid" that appeared in the original Star Wars film began as a simple creative flourish—essentially a box mounted on a remote-controlled vehicle. Yet audiences embraced it, and the MSE-6 model has since become a recurring presence across the Star Wars franchise, appearing in films, television series, and games. Every canonical version, however, remains visually identical. Cass, the maker behind Chaos Theory, took a different approach: she envisioned how these droids might actually function and evolve within the Star Wars universe, resulting in a customized MSE-6 that doubles as a party machine.

Within Star Wars lore, billions of MSE-6 units were manufactured. For inhabitants of that galaxy, they would hold no more significance than everyday appliances or consumer goods on Earth. This premise opens the door to personalization—the kind of modifications that Sabine Wren, a character known for her artistic flair, might undertake. Cass' build explores precisely this concept.

For those less versed in Star Wars mythology, the description is straightforward: a charming autonomous robot capable of independent movement, equipped with illuminated elements, striking custom paint, and a special rave mode. When activated, this mode transforms the droid into a mobile dance platform—complete with graffiti-style artwork, spinning motion, synchronized music playback, and pulsing light effects.

Hardware and construction

The 3D-printed exterior maintains the recognizable MSE-6 silhouette, but the internals are built around an Arduino UNO Rev3 microcontroller. Two motors handle movement, regulated through an L298N motor driver. A 7.4V lithium battery pack supplies energy, with a buck converter stepping the voltage down to 5V for the control systems. An ultrasonic sensor handles obstacle detection, while a DFPlayer Mini MP3 module manages audio output. Visual effects come from arrays of 5mm red LEDs distributed across the chassis.

The finished result owes much to Cass' artistic execution. She documented her inspiration, methodology, and materials, though the exceptional quality of the final piece reflects her considerable creative skill. The outcome is precisely the kind of personalized mouse droid that a character like Sabine Wren would claim as her own.
